These are the bare facts, see below for a 21 picture storyboard of what happens during a run and click here to see video of what happens on-board during a run.

Every run starts with the tow down from the pits to the staging lanes along with other competitors from the same class. |
![]() |
The back of the tow car contains a selection of tools, two battery packs, two clip-on starters, de-icer and tyre covers (yellow) in case the car has to wait in the sun too long and the tyre pressure builds up. |
![]() |
An essential part of the pre-race procedure is strapping the driver in. Here Harry Palmer is sorting out the belts prior to hooking them up to the quick release buckle. Harry tightens the straps until Dave is firmly held in the seat and then tightens them again. |
![]() |
Tyre pressures are critical so Ricki Packham checks and adjusts them in the last few moments before start-up. |
![]() |
This is the clip-on starter which fits on the front of the supercharger. It turns the engine over via the belt which drives the supercharger when the engine is running. |
![]() |
The starter is run twice, once to build up oil pressure then a second time to start the engine. In this picture Harry has just removed the starter and on the right David Wilson has been squirting neat fuel into the engine to help the starting process. |
![]() |
Then the all important burnout which both heats up the tyres and puts two stripes of sticky rubber on the track. |
![]() |
At the far left David is guiding Dave back over the stripes he's just laid to ensure he has maximum grip at the start line. Harry gives the car a visual check while Ricki sprays anti freeze on the supercharger inlet to stop it icing up while the engine idles. |
![]() |
A green light and Dave is already past the start line. Notice how much the tyre is distorted at the moment of launch, it looks as if the burnout was good and the tyre is gripping well. |
![]() |
At the far end Dave has already got out of the car and wrapped the parachutes around the rear wing by the time the tow car arrives. Dave jumps back in after the tow rope has been attached to guide the car on its' way back to the pit. |
![]() |
First stop is the weigh station where the scrutineers check the total weight of car and driver to ensure it is still above the class minimum. |
![]() |
Then on down through the pit area, made hazardous by the many members of the public who are strolling around looking at the cars. |
![]() |
There always comes a point where somebody has to push the car the last few yards under the awning. Linda Wilson looks on as the car returns home. |
![]() |
Then comes the rush of between runs maintenance. One part which is always checked is the clutch because it suffers considerable abuse on any serious run. Access is eased by quick removal of the gearbox and bell housing. The clutch is comprised of several plates and floaters all held together in the major structure shown here. |
![]() |
This is the titanium bell housing together with a clutch plate and two floaters. Titanium is used in this application to contain the parts should the clutch break in use. |
![]() |
Big end bearings are checked after most runs since they too suffer significant loadings during any run, and any imbalance in performance will often be revealed by the wear pattern. Here Ricki is encouraging the parts to go back together. |
![]() |
In some cases a change of cylinder heads is required. Here Harry is cleaning a head prior to disassembly. |
![]() |
Meanwhile Ricki has installed a fresh cylinder head and is torqueing it down. The bell housing and gearbox are back in place in the lower left of the picture. |
![]() |
Outside the awning Katherine Sparrow and Suzie Kraike are untangling and repacking the parachutes. |
![]() |
Once everything is back together the car is fired up to check that all is well and that it is ready to race. The crew all wear full face masks to filter the visible haze of exhaust fumes. |
![]() |
And then, if all has gone well, there is time to climb on the roof of the trailer to watch what other racers are doing. |
